A consistent winner in accounting competitions, the University of Baguio (UB) yet again pocketed awards during the 5th National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (NFJPIA)-Region I and CAR Annual Regional Convention in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte last Jan. 26-28.

Derick Harrold Lipura, a fifth year accountancy student of UB, clinched UB’s first win, emerging as the champion in the Master in Business Laws and Taxation quiz bee and eventually scooping a 100% tuition grant from Northern CPA Review (NCPAR), a gold medal from PricewaterhouseCoopers and a plaque from Sycip, Gorres, Velayo and Company (SGV). The quiz covered Philippine taxation and business laws.

Likewise, Jenya Dan Valdez – also a fifth year UB accountancy student – landed third in Master in Auditing, which focused on CPA board examination subjects such as Auditing Problems and Auditing Theory. Valdez was granted a 50% tuition scholarship by NCPAR. She also brought home a bronze medal from SGV. In addition, she and teammate Marycris Castañeda placed second in the Executive Officers’ Encounter that tackled general knowledge and logic.

Moreover, securing the second spot in the Search for Regional Accounting Wizards were Stephanie Solomon, Georgette Guma-ad and Valerie Jane Valdez, each winning a 75% tuition grant from NCPAR as well as silver medal and plaque from SGV. The competition highlighted all the CPA board examination subjects.

Solomon and Guma-ad also competed as finalists in Master in Practical Accounting Quiz Bee and in Master in Business Laws and Taxation, respectively.

Meanwhile, in recognition of their outstanding leadership during the federation year 2013-2014, Noah Rex Talosig and Kama-i Sulikam Okubo – both fourth year UB accountancy students – were awarded medals from SGV.

Lipura will represent CAR and Region I in the Annual National Convention in Pampanga on April 28-30.
