Aimed at providing University of Baguio (UB) students guidance and exposures that will give them ample opportunities of actual work experience, the University and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Police Regional Office-Cordillera (PRO-COR) signed a memorandum of agreement on Feb. 20.
The agreement – spearheaded by PCSupt. Isagani Nerez, PNP PRO-COR Director; Dr. Rebecca Miranda, UB Vice President for Academic Affairs; and Dr. Ely Jose As-il, UB School of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Dean – provides for the conduct of a practicum program for the UB Mass Communication and Broadcasting students wherein PRO-COR shall “accommodate the students for news gathering training.”
The students will be oriented on the proper coverage and reporting of police-related incidents.
PCSupt. Nerez encouraged the students to be “active in the use of the tri-media of the PNP” for them to understand the legal protocol and policies of the PNP in media relation especially in responding to crime incidents.
He added that such partnership will be a “big help to the students” especially in gathering and interpreting information on police beats. “Mas magandang makita nila mismo ang programa ng kapulisan sa peace and order agenda,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Cesar Liwanag, program chair for BA Mass Communication and BA Broadcasting, noted, “The University is truly grateful that the students are accommodated and given a chance to be exposed in the journalism field and face the real world of media through the help of the PNP.”
As part of the outcome-based curriculum, the students are required to produce a news and current affairs program format project. –Vilma Mandapat
