Now on its second year, the University of Baguio (UB) staged the International Tourism and Hospitality Students’ Convention at the CAP Convention Center, Camp John Hay last Feb. 4.

The convention, attended by more than 1,000 students and educators from around the country, focused on MICE tourism. MICE, which stands for “Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events,” is a type of tourism in which large groups, usually planned well in advance, are brought together for a particular purpose.

Ben Montgomery, director of business relations management at Centara Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Thailand, spoke on the topic “Tourism in the Future and Your Future in Tourism.” Dr. Thirumaran Kailasam, acting associate dean for business and IT at James Cook University in Singapore, shared his thoughts on entrepreneurship for MICE destinations. Meanwhile, Dr. Robert Lim Joseph, chairman of Tourism Educators and Movers of the Philippines (TEAM) Philippines, spoke on the prospects and challenges in the MICE industry.
