Marwan Samer Rajab, a foreign student of the University of Baguio (UB), made it as one of the finalists in the Search for the Three Most Outstanding International Students in the Philippines for school year 2016-2017.

Egypt-born Rajab, 21, was among the 14 finalists in the Search, which looked into the nominees’ leadership qualities, school and community involvement, and academic performance.

At the awarding ceremony held last March 1 in Manila, Rajab was presented a certificate of distinction for having been chosen by UB as one of its “outstanding” international students in the University. He was also handed the International Friendship Award for being an “embodiment of international friendship”.

Prior to the awarding rites, Rajab and the other nominees went through a series of screening: an individual interview, a written test, an extemporaneous speech, and a talent presentation. Their final ratings were determined based on their scores in the following criteria: academic average, interview, and written and oral tests.

Asked about what he learned from the competition, Rajab answered: “You always have to be real – with yourself, with other people. As long as you’re confident in who you are, you’ll be fine.”

Rajab is currently the auditor of the International Students’ Association of UB, which has around 300 members. Shirley Diño serves as the organization’s adviser.

The event was organized by the Philippine International Friendship and Understanding Association, founded in 1952 to welcome and assist foreign students and visitors. The organization generally aims to promote social, educational and spiritual fellowship between Filipinos and foreign students.

Colleges and universities in the country are annually invited to send their nominations for the Search. This year, some of the participants include De La Salle University, St. Scholastica’s College, and Centro Escolar University among others.
