CHESS PRODIGIES UB's Haridas Pascua and Bea Mendoza have collected eight medals from the ASEAN Championship,
pushing the country up the second spot in the over-all ranking.
University of Baguio (UB) chessers FIDE Master Haridas Pascua and Bea Mendoza shone anew in the recently concluded 14th ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championship held in Chiang Mai, Thailand last June 6 - 14.
FM Pascua, an Information Technology student of UB, bagged five gold medals - including one silver - in the under-20 boys' division. He raked in gold medals in the individual rapid and blitz categories and silver medal in the individual standard category. Likewise, he teamed up with International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia and National Master John Alcon Datu to sweep the team golds in the standard, rapid, and blitz team competitions.
Meanwhile, Mendoza – together with Allaney Jia Doroy of Agusan and Natori Diaz of Sagay City – won the gold medal in the standard team category of the under-12 girls' division. The trio nosed out heavy favorite Vietnam with 16 ½–17 points to clinch the award. In addition, the team bagged the bronze in the rapid team category.
Mendoza, a first year student of the UB Preparatory High School who is the reigning National Under-12 Girls Chess champion, will once again represent the country in the 2013 Asian Youth Chess Championship slated on June 20 – 27 in Sari, Iran.
The tournament, organized by the ASEAN Chess Confederation, used three categories in each age group. The blitz chess had a time control of five minutes each player with a two-second increment while the rapid chess had a time control of 25 minutes per player with a 10-second increment. The standard category was played with a time control of 90 minutes per player with 30 seconds increment.
Moreover, the University reigned during the 26th Baguio Center Mall Tourney, with UB ace Leonardo Abalos winning the Open Division and Rachelle Pascua securing the top lady award. Also, Marvin Limocon finished third in the Kiddies' Division.
The UB chess team is coached by Engr. Joseph Codiaman and Ronaldo Alvez of the UB Athletics Department.
