UB studes win in bread baking competition

University of Baguio’s Ella Joy Simeon and John Mark Dela Cruz secured the first place in the Tinapay Natin Pinoy Bread Baking Competition held at the University of Santo Tomas last Nov. 20.

 

The duo’s bread recipes included the Macaube Roll Cream Cheese, a traditional cinnamon roll made with ube, macapuno and cream cheese, and the Star Monay Berry Choco bread with strawberry as the main ingredient.

 

The competition, conducted by pair, was opened to students and hobbyists from across the country, promoting creativity and innovation among Filipino bakers. It was conceived along the following premise: Bread has become staple for Pinoys from all walks of life and for many households, it has become part of their daily breakfast and sometimes snack. But as the pastry and cookie baking has continued to flourish, the basic bread baking seemed to have been forgotten by Filipino bakers. Because of this, Pilmico Foods Corporation together with Max’s Corner Bakery comes to the rescue through the competition, which had its first run last year.

 

Simeon and Dela Cruz made it to the finals of the competition after finishing second in the regional leg held last Oct. 14 at the Baguio Convention Center. Mike Delin and Ray Lachica also settled at the third place during the said competition.

 

The winning breads will be featured and sold at Max’s starting January 2018.

 

The duo received Php 30,000 cash prize.

 

Chef Racquel Tacwigan served as the participants’ adviser.
