Holding its post as the undefeated ten-time champion, the University of Baguio School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (UB-IHTM) dominated this year's Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism (HRT) Weekend — one of the city's crowd-drawing yearly activities.
Pocketing a total of 52 medals — 21 gold, 13 silver, 18bronze — UB captured the gold medals in the Chef Wars. Under the New Asia sub-category, Alvin Patrick Sabado, Melvin Conti, and Sweet Eulynette Chumawar edged out all the other participants while Robenson Dasalla, Karlos Marion Chavez, and Earl Wandit Madalang led the UB team in the Western sub-category for the win.
Likewise, Alfred Bucasan II and Crystal Karen Mae Carracedo bagged the gold medals in The Soup Kitchen; Jerrome Kervie Medrano and Claro Nang-is in The Cordillera Kitchen; Kendall Lappao and Raymart James Saro in Amuse-bouche; and Aileen Allas and Bryle Alos in Cold Seafood Platter.
In addition, Marjorie Lorenzana, Renz Arielle Pangilinan, and Roxanne Keith Mina won the table-setting contest while Jo-Ann Marie Ramilo, Mark Robbin Florendo, and John Fernan Enano ruled the housekeeping category.
Also, Marville Badua and Benedict Galunza nailed the dish gardening and Ice Breakers events, respectively. Danielle Cline Olsim topped the Pralines making while Arnold Rodel Agusdan Jr., Lovelee Mariel Bajada, and Jerson Malinao baked their way to finish as winners in the wedding cake preparation.
Moreover, the UB team – formed by Danmer Jay De Guzman, Airwin Bonilla, Yvonne Sagra, Natasha Marrero, Maireen Jade Namoro, and Kenna Shede Boado – championed the HRT Quiz Bee. Bolly Flex’s and Jamaica Joy Ligon’s flairs also got them celebrating after winning the HRAB Got Talent.
UB’s Charmaine Anne Discipulo and Jehoash Oriao further brought home silver medals in the Garden Set-up (Stage Set-up) competition – the same accolade Maria Theresa Cabotaje and Roxanne Bugtong clutched in cupcake-making.
Furthermore, the University collected medals in the following competitions:
- The Salesman – Rachelle Ann Montoya, Krizelle Panelo, Jessel Joy Rufin, Josephine Talosig, Gerald Carlo Figueras, and Helen Angway (highest score in the Salesman competition, 99 per cent)
- Bellman’s Hour – Lauren Enrico Garcia, Alvin Montelibano, and Dave Randolf Aydoc
- Dessert Flambé – Aira Leigh Suguitan and Arian Anglo
- The Filipino Ice Carver (Individual) – Benedict Galunza

Meanwhile, fascinating the Baguio crowd during the most thrilling part of the activity were UB's Euler Langeg and Myles Costales who were crowned Mr. and Ms. HRAB 2013, respectively.
More importantly, this year’s exceptional tourism students and educators were honored by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio (HRAB). UB students Aira Suguitan, Rachelle Anne Montoya, Malek Barah Abdoh, and Rickzon Verceles were hailed Outstanding HRM and Tourism Students while Melanie Rulla-Saro and Isagani Paddit of the UB School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (SIHTM) were cited Baguio's Outstanding Hospitality and Tourism Educators. Additionally, SIHTM's Chef Maricris Agas received the coveted Outstanding Chef award.
The 10th HRT Weekend, held on Sept. 5-7, was organized by HRAB.
