Once again making waves in the national arena, the University of Baguio (UB) made it to the finals of the Philippine Tourism Students’ Tour Guiding Competition in Manila on Sept. 14, finishing as second runner-up.

Lauren Kaye de los Reyes, a fourth year student of the UB School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (SIHTM), competed against 17 participants from different colleges and universities in the country.

The activity – organized by the Lyceum of the Philippines University – showcased 40 of the top destinations in the country, which the participants had to be familiar with prior to the competition.

“We had to memorize what those places are, how they look like,” said de los Reyes.

The students then battled it out for the crown during the competition that featured clever presentation skills from some of the nation’s finest Tourism students.

“Our subjects in the School of IHTM covered those that were tackled in the competition, so I think that helped,” de los Reyes said.

“This is the first time we [UB] ever joined [the event]. And UB was the only university from the region to participate. It was overwhelming,” she added. “I learned confidence and self-discipline. It’s something that I can use especially in my field.”

Two other UB-SIHTM students, Krizelle Panelo and Maireen Jade Namoro, also competed. Panelo qualified for the final round while Namoro made it to the preliminary eliminations.

The UB delegates were coached by Jenelyn Mangangey-Magpatoc and co-coached by Joanna Marie Victorio.

The competition’s judges included major names from some of the Philippines’ biggest travel agencies.
