The University of Baguio (UB) has recently racked up impressive awards in medical technology in three of the country’s major competitions.

UB secured the fifth place in the nationwide Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET) Quiz show held at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay on Sept. 20 – a rather massive leap from its 12th place-finish last year.

The UB participants – Jarniel Bonus Jr., Jeremiah Chilam, Mark Gideon Wallis, and Reichelle Ann Cruz – pitted their wits against the 38 schools from all over the country that gathered for the competition. Prominent schools such as the University of Sto. Tomas, Far Eastern University and Centro Escolar University joined the contest.

The quiz covered microbiology, hematology, microscopy, histopathology, serology and immunology as well as the laws related to medical technology.

“I think one of the reasons we won is the fact that the course curriculum [in UB] is advanced. And the training that we undergo in [UB’s] clinical laboratory is extensive. I think that helped a lot,” Gideon Wallis, a fourth year Medical Laboratory Science student of UB, said.

Likewise, the team landed fifth in a separate competition also spearheaded by PAMET, the Regional Quiz Show. Participated in by 11 schools from Region 1 and CAR, the quiz bee was held in Pampanga on Sept. 14.

Moreover, the University retained its second place-win in the PAMET-Baguio CAR Inter-laboratory Quiz Show held on Sept. 28. Aime Leu Nidoy, Joel Sarmiento, and Jenina Cleto of the UB School of Natural Sciences faced off with the participants of the different clinical laboratories in the city, nailing the second place.

UB also settled at the second spot in last year’s event.

The teams were coached by Charisse Kim.

PAMET has 47 provincial chapters in the country totalling to more than 13,000 members and is internationally affiliated with the Asia Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, International Federation in Clinical Chemistry, and the International Federation of Biochemical Laboratory Scientists among others.
