Representing the University of Baguio, BS psychology students presented their thesis paper and shared their results on the interplay between social media and the social relationships of college students in the Philippines at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, California.

Their presentation at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 2024 was not just a culmination of months of hard work but also a representation of their passion for research. It was indeed a wonderful opportunity since after the pandemic this was the first ever involvement of BS Psychology to engage in an international paper presentation.

The dedicated students namely, Antoinette Duenas and co-author Bridget Alcedo are 4th year BS Psychology students who are currently enrolled in their practicum. They successfully presented their paper entitled “Social Media: Its Role in the Social Relationship Among College Students (Philippines),” in front of the NCUR participants as they offered a comprehensive quantitative analysis of how social media platforms shape and influence the dynamics of interpersonal connections among the youth. At the heart of their study lay a deep curiosity about the impact of social media on the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of relationships among college students. Moreover, the study shed light on social media and transformed the manner in which college students approached and behaved in intimate relationships. They also stated in their abstract that social media made it easier for college students to engage in social interaction, facilitated rapid relationship progression, and enabled digital togetherness among the youth.

During their presentation at NCUR 2024, the University of Baguio student delegates captivated the participants with their research insights and thought-provoking analysis. In the end, their participation in NCUR 2024 was more than just a presentation—it was a celebration of intellectual curiosity, cultural diversity, and the transformative power of research. As they returned home to the Philippines, they carried with them not only the lessons learned and connections made but also a renewed sense of purpose in their pursuit of knowledge and understanding.

They would also like to extend their gratitude to their research adviser Prof. Grace L. Duenas who unconditionally supported them throughout their journey. Their research teacher Prof. Rhoda Carbonel for her guidance and patience. Their panelists who gave invaluable insights Prof. Maria Alma Cabunag; Prof. Shirley Dino; and Dr. Beatriz Dumo. They would also like to extend their acknowledgements to Dr. Marianne Andrada as their tool validator and Dr. Thea Suaco as their ethics reviewer. Lastly, to Prof. Miguel Xerxes R. Villacrucis who served as statistician.  The researchers greatly acknowledge that without the research committee they wouldn’t be where they are.
