UB’s Pheonix dancer’s hobby becomes ticket to stardom

MARIA Verona Cattleya Quinto, a Tourism student at the University of Baguio (UB), took home the gold and a bronze trophy after being proclaimed as the champion in the 2009 Dance Sport Council of the Philippines Incorporated (DSCPI) Midyear Ranking and Competition.

Held at Philsports Complex, Pasig City on June 20, the competition was participated in by both student and non-student dance sport enthusiasts coming from the different regions of the country.

Quinto, together with partner Mark Andrew Gumagay won the judges’ approval and were proclaimed as the best in the Special Event M-Latin-American Discipline Category. This category is a set of Latin dances consisting of the Cha-cha-cha, Rumba, and Jive.

They placed third among seven pairs in another category, the Grade D-Latin-American Discipline. This category involves two dances, the Cha-cha-cha and the Rumba.

“I’m proud to represent Baguio as well as the whole of the Cordillera Administrative Region in this kind of event,” said the budding dance professional Quinto.

She said to participate in a competition such as this is a tough job. It took her years before she could master well the moves of the non-ordinary international dances. Focus, determination, discipline, and devotion are inevitable in her training, she said.

The fourth year Quinto has always loved dancing since she was young. It was when she got into college that she came to be acquainted with Latin dancing. She joined the Graces, UB’s dance group, and later became its choreographer in 2005 to 2006. She proceeded to be the choreographer of Dance Phoenix, UB’s Dance Sport group from 2006 to now.

Dance Phoenix, under the advisory of Dr. Rose Mary Estoesta, became Quinto’s training ground. As a choreographer, she teaches and leads the group’s daily rehearsals, at the same time giving her the opportunity of practices and training in preparation for her upcoming matches.

“Masaya,” Quinto’s reply on how does it feel to be a champion. “I’m overwhelmed, and I’m really happy I was able to lift up Baguio by winning in this dance contest.”

The future Tourism professional is set to compete in three more dance sport contests this year.

On August, she will be joining in a city-wide quest for the best dancers at YMCA, Baguio City.

She will have her first taste of an international dance competition on September in Cebu City; and on October, another national competition in Pasig City by the DSCPI.

Published in the Sun.Star Baguio newspaper on July 8, 2009.
