A Day in the Life of an Intern Abroad

  

 

Editor's Note: The University of Baguio deploys its Hotel & Restaurant Management and Tourism students in establishments in the country and abroad for its local and international on-the-job training program. For over five years, UB has deployed more than 200 trainees in more than three countries across Asia and America. In the following article, UB trainee Natazzia Aleksandrea Owek shares her experience training in the U.S. 

 

 

Where do I even start? Waking up at four in the morning to prepare for work? Or the fact that I need to sleep as soon as I get home from working on a late-night duty so I can wake up early again in the morning for work? This is just a part of the routine of being a student trainee, at least on the other side of the globe.

 

 

So what is this routine exactly? I’ll give you a glimpse. I need to be at work more or less thirty minutes before I clock in. Upon arriving at work, I would greet everyone around my area and project a happy spirit. I try to be really prepared before I start my shift.

 

 

Before the day ends, I reflect on what I have learned and the good things that happened that day. It motivates me to continuously perform better.

 

 

I head home with my bike. Before going to bed, I make sure I call my family and some friends back home to let them know how my day was. I say “good morning”; they say “good night”.

 

 

I was stationed in different areas in the duration of my internship and I learned that it is important to have the willingness to be trained in as many areas as possible. The best part of my internship was having the chance to talk and make good conversations with the guests, learning a little bit about themselves, where they came from, their travel plans.

 

 

When I first got there, I wasn’t even sure how to do things to survive. But I just told myself I could do it, and I did.

 

 

Lastly, some tip: It is very important to start your day right. Whether you work morning shift, mid-shift or afternoon shift, make sure that your stomach is full and that you have a positive disposition before going to work because it will affect your performance for the rest of the shift.
