The summit highlighted extensive group discussions aimed at "empowering the indigenous people" in the country.
A consultative summit dubbed “A Strategic Conversation on the Empowerment of Indigenous People (IP) Communities through Education and Self-Determination” was held at the Centennial Hall last Nov. 9-10.
During the summit, extensive discussions on the indigenous people in the country were held in groups composed of school administrators, faculty members and community organizers from state colleges and universities (SUCs) from across the country.
Among the issues and concerns discussed include the integration of a program on IP’s economic development into the curriculum of SUCs; inclusion of IP history and culture in the study of Philippine history in basic and higher education levels; establishment of an IP studies center; and women empowerment in IP communities, among others. Overall, the discussions centered on creating ways to “make a difference in the lives of indigenous people in the country.”
In his remarks, Commissioner Ronald Adamat has underscored the need for education to be inclusive, covering all groups, cultures and beliefs.
The summit was organized by the Commission on Higher Education.
