UB Dentistry students provide free dental services during the outreach co-organized by the
Philippine Dental Association - Benguet Chapter.
Dentistry students from the University of Baguio (UB) participated in the medical mission held as part of the Baguio Day celebration.
Held last Aug. 31 at the roof deck of Abanao Square, the outreach activity included tooth extraction, dental check-up and topical fluoride application, which were performed by the students.
Beneficiaries included those residing near Abanao Square as well as Abanao Square employees and passers-by.
The mission also included free medical and optical check-up, where medicines were distributed. A blood donation was likewise held as part of the outreach activity.
Participants from UB included 14 Dentistry students, together with Dr. Stephanie Saxton, outreach coordinator of the UB School of Dentistry, and Dr. Peter Cating, president of the UB Dentistry Alumni Association.
Remarked one of the UB Dentistry students, “We dealt with different kinds of patients and cases – hypertensive patients, diabetic patients, children patients, periodontal cases. We were able to manage most of them. We referred them first to the medical doctors for clearance before providing them with the needed services.”
Shared another, “We were able to apply what we have been taught... My perspective changed, especially because we were able to help without expecting anything in return.”
Materials, which included an autoclave machine among others, were provided by the Rotary Club of Baguio and the Philippine Dental Association - Benguet Chapter, which spearheaded the said outreach activity. – Nicole Ashley Atiwag and Mark Nelson Ines
