The University of Baguio (UB) arnis team raked in a total of 31 medals during the 1st Philippine Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation National Championships dubbed “Battle of the Champions” held last July 6-8 in Pasay, helping the Luzon team reach a second runner-up finish in the competition.
UB’s Kevin Claen Balansi (two golds, one silver), Eza Rai Yalong (two golds, one silver), Abegail Abad (one gold, one bronze), Lee Carl Iglesias (one gold, two silvers), Jaylord Dela Cruz (one gold, one silver), Danilo Cuhpag (one gold), Elmer Manlapas (one gold), and Jhester Neil Pasicolan (one gold) scored major points in the competition, earning them their respective spots in the Philippine team.
Dianne Eve Bantasan (two silvers), Felvy Ah-ul (one silver, two bronzes), Evelina Burdette (one silver, one bronze), Rhossy Flor Miguel (one silver, one bronze), Renz Christian Reyes (one silver), Richard Tambol (one silver), Shaira Mae Wangag (two bronzes), Don Lee Aliga (one bronze), Irish May Andason (one bronze), Raven Gipit (one bronze), Zakk Lorcan Lardizabal (one bronze), Mack John-Neil Pineda (one bronze), and Ricvel Sacwog (one bronze) – also from the UB arnis team – likewise battled it out in the competition.
The UB gold medalists will represent the country in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. Playing coach Ruth Ann Lavarias, who pocketed one gold and one bronze, will also play at the Southeast Asian Games.
Around 150 champion athletes of arnis and eskrima nationwide participated in the two-day tournament.
The UB arnis team is coached by Andre Dean Foman-eg, Karl Mico Alangui, and Ruth Ann Lavarias.
