The University of Baguio (UB) Cardinals pulled off a back-to-back, big-time win as it dominated the volleyball championships for both men and women in the 28th Season of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL), the biggest collegiate sports league in Northern Luzon.
Defending its title, the UB women’s volleyball team overpowered the Saint Louis University (SLU) Navigators in a two-game match to emerge as the champion. The first game saw the lady Cardinals subdue the SLU Navigators to come up successful, 3 – 0. UB advanced to the second game and finished unbeaten, 3 – 1.
Meanwhile, the UB men’s volleyball team hurled a major upset at the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Jaguars in the men’s category following a huge win by UB in a three-game bout. UB nailed the first game, 3 – 0, but weakened in the second, 1 – 3. However, it came back lashing in the third game, 3 – 1, giving UC a key loss. Home court advantage did not seemingly play out well for the UC Jaguars.
“We were in their home court; it’s kind of not easy to be playing while everything else is in your rival’s favor – the crowd, the game, the court – especially in Game 2. But we were ready for that,” said Kurl Rosete, the team captain of the UB men’s volleyball team.
The UB men’s volleyball team last snagged the championship in 2006. Meanwhile, the lady Cardinals held the title in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
The UB volleyball teams are coached by Junjun Nisperos of the UB Athletics Department headed by its director, Eduardo Laureano.
The Cardinals are training for the upcoming Private Schools Athletic Association meet.
