Securing the second place, the University of Baguio (UB) battled it out in the bridge-building competition at the National Midyear Convention of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers held in Angeles, Pampanga on June 16-18.

Jonald Borbe, Claudette De La Cruz, Mark Joseph Falsario, Roy Fegsar and Allan Ganaden – who formed the UB team – competed against 24 other groups, some of them from the biggest schools in Manila.

The teams were given three hours to complete their respective bridges, which were made of cardboard. “We usually use sticks and straws to build, but this one was different. It was a lot harder,” said De La Cruz.

“You have to consider the design, load capacity and weight of the bridge. The lighter it is, the better. The more weight it can carry, the better,” noted Fegsar.

An engineering summit was also held as part of the convention wherein lectures were held. “We also attended a seminar on leadership,” added Ganaden.

“We definitely learned about teamwork, which does not happen everyday,” Borbe said.

The UB team was supervised by Engr. Jica De La Cruz and Engr. Edgardo Javier. They are off to compete in another convention in Davao on Nov. 17-19.

In 2014, UB secured the first place in the same event, represented by Borbe, Falsario, Ganaden, Jonathan Corbillon and Liezel Masweng.
