UB’s Macaullay Raquel receives his certificate from conference director Eugenio Calapit during the awarding ceremony.
University of Baguio’s Macaullay Raquel won the gold medal in the photojournalism (tertiary) category of the 16th Word Cup PH held in Subic last Sept. 27-29.
Raquel was likewise awarded the silver medal for his piece “Sustainable Tourism” in the feature writing (English category – tertiary) category during the said conference.
Word Cup PH is an extensive, reality-based journalism training-workshop held across Asia. Among this year’s topics include Mobile Journalism 24/7, which was discussed by Rowena Paraan of ABS-CBN News; radio broadcasting; social media live streaming; live press conference; sports coverage; photojournalism; copy reading and headline writing; and collaborative publishing.
Says Macaullay, “[The event] really [engages you] to learn and hone your skills in journalism. I believe that students [should be given] the chance to join the workshop so that [they] can be able to express themselves and influence others through journalism.”
Nanay Rosa, Raquel 's subject in his photojournalism entry, explains the
medicinal uses of herbs found in her community.
The conference participants were deployed in an Aeta community in Pamulaklakin Forest,
where they witnessed how fire is produced with bamboo friction.
