United Nations Day at UB: A Showcase of Cultural Diversity




  A group of Japanese students showcase their country’s national costume during the fashion show.



In a distinctive showcase of cultural diversity, the University of Baguio (UB) staged the UB United Nations Day celebration, highlighted by the Mr. and Ms. United Nations 2016 and a show of cultural performances including a fashion show at the Centennial Hall on Nov. 7.


Ayat Mohamed Abdelaty was crowned Ms. United Nations 2016. The 22-year-old lass from Egypt studies Dentistry in UB.


US-born Rebecca Matillano, 19, finished as first runner-up. Matillano studies Bachelor of Arts in Music. Singapore native Joey Zuoyi Ng, 19, settled as second runner-up. Ng is a freshman Bachelor of Science in Information Technology student of the University.


Meanwhile, Phuoc Quy Yen Nguyen (Vietnam), 20, who studies Bachelor of Arts in English, landed as third runner-up while Yeyoung Jang (Korea), 19, won as fourth runner-up. Jang is taking Bachelor of Arts in English.


On the other hand, Chitrayuth Chutchaipholrat (Thailand) was crowned Mr. United Nations 2016. Chutchaipholrat, 22, studies Bachelor of Arts in English. Marwan Rajab, 21, clutched the first runner-up title. He is from Jordan and is taking Dentistry.


Mohammed Mohamed, 22, finished as third runner-up. He is also studying Dentistry. He is from Sudan.


The UB International Students’ Association, which has over 300 members, spearheaded the activity.


The event is in commemoration of the United Nations Day, observed on the 24th of October every year. The United Nations Day is part of United Nations Week, which runs from October 20 to 26.


The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has stressed the profound role cultural diversity plays in advancing development. “Cultural diversity is a driving force of development… In its rich diversity, culture has intrinsic value for development as well as social cohesion and peace.”
