History of School of Dentistry

The University of Baguio School of Dentistry (UBSD), situated in the City of Pines, is one of the leading Schools of Dentistry in the country today, it offers the students a conducive learning environment and a quality education that is based on the vision/mission of the institution that prepares them into the future to become globally competitive and be a reputable members of the dental profession, as well as a socially responsible individual in the community.

The College of Dentistry was established in 1980. The DOCTOR OF DENTAL MEDICINE (DMD) course was one of the programs opened by Dr. Reynaldo C. Bautista when he assumed the university leadership as the third President of the UNIVERSITY OF BAGUIO in June of the same year. It obtained government recognition in 1986 (Government Recognition No. 056; S. 1986, Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports). The performance of the first batch of graduates of the UB College of Dentistry in the 1984 Board Exams was very impressive.  They hurdled the May and December Board Exams with a 100% passing rate.  Three of the UB examinees landed among the top twenty of the national board passers: 6th place (1), 13th place (1) and 18th place. Since then, the UB School of Dentistry has been consistently producing a very high passing rate of board passers as well as a number of topnotchers.

The College of Dentistry was not spared during the 1990 earthquake that devastated the city and its nearby provinces, most of the dental equipment and facilities were damaged beyond repair so the faculty have to sacrifice and make innovative ways like letting the clinicians use their own dental clinics for them to finish their clinical requirements.

Just like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the College of Dentistry thru the leadership of the UB president Virgilio C. Bautista rose above the occasion, where increased enrolment was felt during the middle of the 90’s and several dental programs were offered and was also the start of joining the accreditation process of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA).

In 1999, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted Government Recognition to University of Baguio to conduct and operate the MASTER OF SCIENCE IN DENTISTRY Course, effective SY 1999 – 2000 (Government Recognition No. 057; S. 1999, Commission on Higher Education.

During the year 2000, from its previous location under the UB gym, the College was transferred to a better location at the FGB bldg., which is now its present location.
In 2006, the Institution changed its MSD program and offered a Master’s Degree IN DENTAL EDUCATION (MDE), and it became a major contributor of master’s degree to various faculty to the different dental schools north of Manila. It is a 42 unit curriculum, comprising of 9 units of foundation courses, 15 units Major Education courses, 12 units of Dentistry core subjects and a 6 units Thesis. Aside from the DMD program, the College also offered the DENTAL TECHNICIAN course, which obtained its government recognition in 1995 (Government Recognition No. 008; S. 1995, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority), but during the middle period of 2000’s the demand was not that high forcing the closure of the program on 2006.

In 2010 the institution made a decision to change the title of the different Colleges into School (Office Circular No. 5; S.2010) in lieu of having a university stature that would be recognized by the national and  international level thus, the name; University of Baguio, School of Dentistry (UBSD).

In 2014 the institution was granted an Autonomous Status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), giving the School of Dentistry a free hand in improving the curriculum.

In 2015, after years of patiently complying with all the requirements of the PACUCOA, the School of Dentistry has finally obtained the Level IV status, the highest level that one can achieve and to top it all, the UBSD is the second Dentistry School in the Philippines to obtain this achievement.

In 2018, after a series of consultation with the different stakeholders coming from the government and different dental schools in the country, came up with a new dental curriculum creating a 6 year dental proper program (Government Recognition No. 03; S. 2018, Commission on Higher Education), which the UB School of Dentistry is now following.
